Plan for Peak Season in Cambodia: Use Last Year’s Sales to Get Ready

Every business in Cambodia has a rush. For some it’s a festival or a holiday week. For others it’s school breaks, wedding season, or the months when more visitors arrive. You probably remember that it was busy. What most owners don’t remember is exactly how busy, which products ran out first, and what the team wished it had prepared.

The good news is that your own sales records already hold the answers. To plan for peak season in Cambodia, you don’t need a forecast or a consultant. You need last year’s numbers and about thirty minutes to read them.

Why Planning by Memory Falls Short

1. You remember the stress, not the numbers A hard week feels bigger in memory than it was, and a quiet week disappears. Planning stock from a feeling means ordering too much of some things and too little of others.

2. Items run out at the worst time Your best sellers get hit hardest during a rush. Running out of them in the busiest week costs more than running out any other time.

3. Staffing is a guess Too few people means long queues and lost sales. Too many means paying for idle hours.

4. Slow items still take up space and cash Buying extra of everything “just in case” ties up money in stock that may not move.

What Your Sales Data Can Tell You

If you’ve been recording sales in your POS, you can answer most planning questions from reports you already have.

1. When your busy periods actually start and end Reports can be filtered by date, so you can compare a normal month against a busy one, or this week against the same week last year, and see where sales really began to rise.

2. Which products drive the rush Sales by item show your top sellers during the busy period. These are the products to protect.

3. Which categories grow most Sales by category show whether the rush is mostly drinks, food, gifts, or something else, so your preparation matches what customers actually buy.

4. Whether branches behave differently If you have more than one location, reports can be filtered by store. A busy season at one branch may look quiet at another.

A Simple Peak-Season Plan

Step 1: Find last year’s peak

Open your reports and pick a date range around last year’s busy period. Compare it with a normal period of the same length. Write down the dates when sales clearly rose and when they returned to normal.

Step 2: List your top sellers in that period

View sales by item for the peak dates. Write down your top ten. These are the items you cannot afford to run out of.

Step 3: Check the quantities

Note roughly how many of each top seller you sold during the peak. Use that as a starting point for how much to order, and add a little extra for growth if your business has grown since.

Step 4: Set up low-stock alerts early

Set a reorder point for your key products, so the system warns you while there’s still time to restock. Our post on managing stock covers how alerts and stocktakes work together.

Step 5: Plan your staff and your counter

If sales doubled last peak, your checkout needs to handle it. Think about extra staff on the busiest days, a second device for taking payment on the floor, and having your receipt printer and scanner tested ahead of time.

Step 6: Review after the rush

When the season ends, open the same reports again. Compare what you planned against what really happened. Write down two or three things to change next year.

If You Don’t Have Last Year’s Data Yet

Not every shop has a full year of records. That’s okay.

  • Start recording every sale now, so next year you’ll have the full picture
  • Use what you remember as a rough guide, then check it against the first weeks of real data
  • Watch the first days of the rush closely and adjust quickly, since your reports update as you sell

Quick Comparison

Planning by Memory Planning From Sales Data
When the rush starts A rough memory Visible in date-filtered reports
What to stock Feels like what sells Based on sales by item
Slow items Easy to overbuy Visible before you order
Staff planning A guess Based on real busy days
Reviewing afterward Hard to compare Same reports, side by side

Who Benefits Most

  • Cafés and restaurants with festival or holiday rushes
  • Retail and gift shops with seasonal buying
  • Shops near tourist areas with busy and quiet months
  • Multi-branch owners whose locations peak at different times

FAQ

Can I compare this year with last year? Yes. Reports can be filtered by date, so you can compare the same period across different years.

Can I see which products sold most during a busy week? Yes. Sales by item, filtered by date, show your top sellers for any period.

What if I have more than one branch? Reports can be filtered by store, so you can see how each location performs during the busy period.

I started using a POS recently. Is it still worth it? Yes. Every week of records you add makes next year’s plan better.

Will a POS tell me exactly how much to order? No. It gives you real numbers to decide with, but the final decision is still yours.
