Close Shop for a Holiday: A Simple Checklist for Cambodia

Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben, the Water Festival: for many shop owners, these are days to be with family. Closing the shop for a few days is natural, but it’s also when things can quietly go wrong. Cash is left in a drawer, stock sits on warm shelves, a phone with the POS stays logged in, and nobody is sure what to do on the first morning back.

A little planning before you close the shop for a holiday makes your time off calmer and your reopening smoother. Here’s a simple checklist.

Two or three days before you close

1. Decide your dates

Choose your closing and reopening days, and tell your customers early. A sign, a social media post and a note at the counter all help.

2. Plan your stock

Don’t overbuy items that won’t sell while you’re closed, especially anything that spoils. See How Much Stock to Order and First In First Out Stock.

3. Sell down short-life items

Use a small offer to move items that might go off. See Running Discounts and Promotions.

4. Brief your team

Confirm dates, pay arrangements and who does what on the last and first days. See New Cashier Training POS for a quick refresher.

On your last day

5. Close every shift

Each cashier ends their own shift, so every drawer has an owner. See Shift and Cash Management.

6. Count the cash and secure it

Count the drawer in both USD and riel, record any difference and decide where the cash will be kept. Don’t leave a full drawer in the shop. See Cash Float USD Riel.

7. Check digital payments

Match your KHQR and ABA PAY payments with your bank or app records. See Fake Payment Screenshot in Cambodia.

8. Count the stock

Run an inventory count and adjust any difference, so you start the new period with accurate numbers. See Inventory Management on a POS.

9. Record expenses

Enter any cash taken out for suppliers or supplies. See POS Expense Tracking in Cambodia.

10. Secure your devices

Log out, charge them and take them with you or lock them away. See Lost or Stolen POS Device.

11. Check the basics

Turn off equipment you don’t need, check fridges and lock the shop.

While you’re away

You don’t need to watch the shop all day, but a quick look can ease your mind. The MyLekha Dashboard lets owners review sales and reports from a phone, if any activity is expected. See Run a Shop Part Time in Cambodia. Otherwise, enjoy your break.

On your first morning back

  • Check your devices and internet. See Daily Closing Checklist POS.
  • Restart each shift with your float counted.
  • Check low stock and place any urgent orders.
  • Review your prices and promotions.
  • Welcome your team and go over the day’s plan.
  • Reopen with a small offer if you like, to welcome customers back.

A quick checklist

Before Last day After
Dates announced Shifts closed Devices tested
Stock planned Cash counted and secured Float counted
Short-life items cleared Digital payments matched Stock checked
Team briefed Stock counted Prices reviewed
Expenses recorded Team welcomed
Devices secured

Conclusion

A holiday should feel like a break, not a worry. With cash counted and secured, stock checked, devices safe and a clear plan for reopening, you can lock the door and enjoy your time away.
