Shoplifting Prevention for Shops: Simple Steps in Cambodia

Most customers are honest. But almost every shop loses a little stock now and then: a small item taken from a shelf, a product tucked into a bag, a gap that nobody can explain at the end of the month. For a small shop with thin margins, even a little loss matters.

Good shoplifting prevention for shops isn’t about treating customers like suspects. It’s about making theft less easy, noticing losses early and responding calmly. This guide covers simple, fair steps, with help from your POS.

First, find out how much you really lose

You can’t fix a problem you can’t see. Many owners guess. Your stock records give you facts.

  • Run regular inventory counts. Compare what’s on the shelf with what the system expects. See Inventory Management on a POS.
  • Count by category. If one category, such as small cosmetics or snacks, is always short, you know where to look.
  • Record each adjustment with a short note, such as “damaged,” “expired” or “unknown,” so patterns appear. MyLekha lets staff add a note to an item in an adjustment.
  • Rule out other causes first. Missing stock can come from wrong scans, unrecorded deliveries or staff mistakes. See Loss Prevention POS Cambodia.

Step 1: Arrange your shop sensibly

  • Keep small, valuable items near the counter or in sight of staff
  • Keep aisles tidy and well lit, so you can see the whole shop
  • Avoid blind corners. A mirror can help
  • Keep a clear view from the counter to the entrance
  • Place high-risk items where staff pass often

Step 2: Be present and friendly

A visible, friendly team is the best deterrent.

  • Greet every customer when they come in
  • Offer help. Attention is polite and discourages theft
  • Keep two people on the floor at busy times if you can
  • Don’t leave the counter empty, even for a moment

Step 3: Check bags and receipts politely

  • Offer a bag or a basket at the entrance
  • Seal bags at the counter and attach the receipt
  • Hand over a receipt every time. See Digital Receipt POS Cambodia

Step 4: Train your team

Staff need to know what to do, and what not to do.

  • Watch, don’t accuse. Never call a customer a thief without clear proof
  • Stay calm and polite
  • Call a manager if you’re unsure
  • Never use force. Follow local rules, and call the authorities if needed
  • Write down what happened, with date, time and item

See New Cashier Training POS.

Step 5: Use cameras carefully, if you use them

If you use cameras, put up a clear sign, place them where they’re useful and keep the recordings safe. They help in disputes, but they’re not a substitute for good habits.

Step 6: Review the numbers regularly

  • Weekly: quick count of your highest-risk items
  • Monthly: full count, with notes. See Month-End POS Checklist
  • Daily: a simple close routine. See Daily Closing Checklist POS

Also check your best-sellers and expensive items, since those matter most. See Best Selling Products on a POS.

If you catch someone

  • Stay calm. Your safety and your staff’s safety come first.
  • Don’t grab, search or threaten. Follow local law.
  • Ask politely and call a manager.
  • Record it. Note what happened, and adjust your stock if needed.
  • Decide your policy in advance, so each case is handled the same way.

Don’t lose good customers

Too much suspicion drives honest customers away. Aim for a shop that feels welcoming but attentive. If a complaint comes up, see Handle Customer Complaints in Cambodia.

A quick checklist

  • Losses measured with regular counts
  • Adjustments recorded with notes
  • Shop layout reviewed
  • Team trained to greet and watch
  • Receipts given every time
  • Policy for incidents decided
  • Numbers reviewed weekly and monthly

Conclusion

You can’t stop every loss, but you can make theft harder and notice it sooner. Measure with regular counts, arrange your shop wisely, train your team to be friendly and alert, and keep calm records. Your profit, and your customers’ trust, will both be better for it.
